This is a presidential executive order (Executive Order 14237, signed March 14, 2025). It directs federal agencies to take a set of actions against the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP (Paul Weiss), citing conduct the order describes as harmful to U.S. interests, including alleged race- and sex-based hiring decisions and past legal work opposed by the administration.
Agencies are told to immediately suspend any active security clearances held by Paul Weiss personnel and by attorney Mark Pomerantz, pending a review of whether those clearances serve the national interest. The Office of Management and Budget must identify all government goods, property, and services (including Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities) provided to the firm, and agencies are to stop providing them where the law allows. On contracting, agencies are directed to require contractors to disclose any business they do with Paul Weiss, to review and terminate contracts tied to the firm where legally permitted, and—within 30 days—to report to OMB an assessment of those contracts and any actions taken. Agencies are also told to limit Paul Weiss employees’ access to federal buildings and official interactions with government staff, and to refrain from hiring the firm’s employees absent a national-security waiver from the agency head. The order states it must be carried out consistent with existing law and available funding, and that it creates no legally enforceable rights.
The most directly affected are Paul Weiss, its employees, and attorney Mark Pomerantz, who face clearance suspensions, restricted building access, hiring limits, and loss of government services. Federal agencies and their contractors are also affected, as they must review contracts, collect disclosures about business ties to the firm, and report to OMB within the 30-day deadline.
