What it is

Executive Order 14277, signed April 23, 2025, directs federal agencies to expand artificial intelligence education and workforce training across K-12 schools, higher education, and apprenticeship programs. It establishes a White House task force to coordinate these efforts and sets specific deadlines for agencies to act within 90 to 120 days.

What it changes

A new White House Task Force on AI Education is created, chaired by the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and including the Secretaries of Agriculture, Labor, Energy, and Education, among others. Within 90 days, the task force must plan a “Presidential AI Challenge” — a national student and educator competition to be held within 12 months, organized by age group, region, and topic. Within 90 days, the Secretary of Education must issue guidance on using existing federal grant funds for AI-based tutoring, instructional tools, and career advising. Within 120 days, the Departments of Education, Labor, and Agriculture, along with the National Science Foundation, must take steps to steer existing teacher-training grants, apprenticeship programs, and workforce funds toward AI skills. Federal fellowship and scholarship programs are directed to treat AI as a funding priority.

Who is affected

K-12 students and their teachers are the primary audience, as the order aims to make AI literacy materials available in classrooms and to train educators to teach and use AI tools. Employers, industry organizations, and nonprofits may be approached to form public-private partnerships and help fund or design curricula and apprenticeship standards. State and local school districts, workforce development boards, and postsecondary institutions could receive new federal guidance or grant priority consideration if they offer AI courses, dual-enrollment options, or apprenticeships.
